ANTIQUE EMBROIDERED CHINESE SLEEVE BANDS QING DYNASTY #2249

Description

Offered for sale is a joined pair of embroidered Qing Dynasty silk sleeve bands. These were originally made to be decorative borders on the sleeves of a woman’s robe.
The embroidery is of the highest quality satin stitch silk on a ground of ivory color silk. Each side is depicting scenes from the Chinese novel ‘Dream of Red Mansions” showing garden pavilions, water and bridges, a variety of trees and flowers as well as 4 figures of young women. all on a background of ivory color silk. The sleeve bands were joined together and framed with an embroidered silk  border. This is a highly unusual piece because the border also  contains depictions of gardens, pavilions and figures. A black silk edging joins the piece to a black silk backing.
