Why UVA-1?
Ultraviolet (UV) phototherapy, in one form or another, has been used by the medical community since the 1950’s to treat a variety of skin conditions.  In the last decade, advancements in medical device technology have made phototherapy treatments even more effective and accessible for these patients, as well as others suffering from more complex conditions.  Over the last decade, Narrowband UVB ((NBUVB) 311-312 nm) has been the clinical standard for treating common dermatologic conditions, but UVA-1 (340-380 nm) advancements have expanded treatment options for a wider group of patients. Unlike UVA (320-400 nm), UVA-1 does not require the use of a combination medication (psoralen), which eases the burden on both the clinic and patient alike.
Nowadays the preferred phototherapy treatment for skin diseases like psoriasis is done through the use of the ‘B’ bandwidth of the UV spectrum (290 to 315 nm), since this requires no photo-sensitizing agent. But some patients do not respond to UVB treatment, and for them, phototherapy systems containing UV lamps with an ‘A-1’bandwidth of the UV spectrum are used. These lamps have a wavelength of between 315 to 380 nm. UVA-1 is used for phototherapy for patients with scleroderma or patients with vitiligo, psoriasis and other skin diseases that do not respond to narrowband UVB.
